The origin of life on earth is a mysterious story which is not yet solved but thanks to this new survey of the oldest known fossil microorganisms.
On Wednesday, researchers said that life may have existed on Earth 3.95 billion years ago. The team found 3,500 million-year-old microscopic squiggles which they say is the evidence of the oldest life on Earth. Since then, scientists have been finding the truth behind this evidence like whether these impressions really represent ancient microorganisms and how they are old.
Now the latest finding suggests that these impressions really represent ancient microbes, which researchers say must have originated some 500 million years ago. So the mysterious story of how life on Earth started became a bit clearer.
Different forms of life have different carbon signatures so the microscopic squiggles’ carbon signatures were analyzed by J. William Schopf, a professor of paleobiology at UCLA and lead author of the study using a cutting-edge tool known as secondary ion mass spectroscopy.
However, some researchers had been unwilling to say that life began very early in timeline of the Earth, this survey claims that squiggles were actually biological creatures and not some sort of mineral deposit, according to the study author.
The carbon signature of one type of microorganism shows that it produced carbon as it was some kind of primitive bacteria and there was little oxygen on Earth at the time.
At that time, methane was a big part of the atmosphere of the Earth so another type of microorganism costumed methane.
Birger Rasmussen, a geobiologist at Curtin University in Perth, Australia said, “It’s worth doing this right, given that we’re seeing some of the oldest possible traces of life,” “Perfecting our abilities to recognize ancient bio farms on Earth is important when we look at Mars and beyond,” he says. He believes that there will be investigation work that assesses more microfossils.
